Write for cash

The power of words

 

 

 

Write for cash? Silly question because of course you can, although you may not have a great deal of confidence in your own ability. Now why is that? No good at school perhaps, or never really tried because "I can't do it?" Well, you can speak and people listen to what you say so what if you just write words down the way you say them?

And there you have it - write for cash, just the way you speak! It's unique, it's your 'style' and best of all, it is completely natural - in other words, you can communicate through the written words, just as clearly as when you speak. The only difference is that you can reach a much bigger audience! And just think how you could have dealt with all those school essays with your word processor and spell checker! Actually, it's just occurred to me that teachers probably don't give out 'lines' as punishment anymore now that everyone has a computer. Heck, that would have saved me some detention time.........

So what does this have to do with future income? Now I am not going to suggest that you start off with a best selling novel - that takes time and also a considerable amount of persistence, but how about starting with simple letters to newspapers? The national newspapers pay well and they are always looking for short, pithy or funny letters. Keep them short - one or two paragraphs is good because it gives the editor something to slot in amongst the long-winded ones. There you have it - you have started your professional career writing for cash!

Magazines too - they have an insatiable demand for very short sories - short reader attention span of course - and they love human interest items, even more so if they are true. Their reader's letters sections provide ripe pickings - often the 'letter of the week' gets a £50.00 or £100.00 cheque.

My late Sister had a gift for writing short - straight to the point - letters and she regularly earned £50 - £100 a week from newspapers. She would watch the television news and anything that caught her attention was worth a comment. She also read through all the newspapers she regularly wrote to, and would comment on articles - or other people's letters.

Try writing a short article - maximum of 1,000 words say - on your hobby or pet interest. If you can include a photograph or two to go with it, that certainly helps. Try offering it to your Parish magazine or the local 'Freebie' newspaper. It won't earn a lot a lot of cash, but it will help to get you started.

There really are no barriers. Someone who worked in an abatoir perhaps, or a farm labourer, or a retired midwife - you all have a story to tell, simply because it's one that other people haven't heard.

A whole new market has developed providing 'content' for internet web-sites. Often, people start sites just to support the advertising they hope to attract. Nothing wrong with that, but they can only get regular visitors if they provide interesting content pages. So, a brand new market for writers who can deliver 600 - 1,000 words on any subject under the sun. It just requires some basic research - on the internet of course - and you can then structure the words to suit the market. Really, schools essays for money! Note that rates of pay are poor so use these articles to further your career or promote your business or web-site.
