Sewing and home alterations

Sewing income? Perhaps you
have never thought of it like that but why not profit from your skills?
It may come as a surprise to discover
that very few younger women can, or indeed want to, sew. Probably evidence
of them growing up in a more affluent age than we did, and also one
which has a far more 'throw-away' attitude.
That said, it present yet another opportunity for
older women to benefit from their skills and build themselves a useful
little income sewing and doing home alterations.
What sort of work is involved?
Mostly altering hemlines and shortening trouser
leg lengths! It never ceases to amaze me how people will buy clothes
without bothering about the right fit, or the fact that they will buy
a new pair of jeans for, say, £4.00 and then pay £5.00 to
have them altered. "Now't so queer
as Folk" as my old Gran would say. The other regular
task seems to be replacing zips - fiddly work! Nevertheless, sewing
income is there in plenty if you want it.
Go about getting work in our usual
fashion. Postcards in your local shops and perhaps a mention in your
church or parish magazine. This is one of those 'word of mouth' - or
viral marketing as the smart kids now call it - opportunities where
people pass your name on to friends and the circle keeps on growing.
Be warned, you may have to limit the number of jobs you take on.
Does it pay? I
suggest you aim for an hourly rate in line with the National minimum
- say something in the order of £5.00 - £6.00 an hour. It
is quiet work, done in your own time and at your own pace. That can't
be bad.........
