Selling your time - it's what most of us did as we went through life. Sure, we learnt along the way, perhaps got extra qualifications etc. As we gained experience, so we usually moved up the promotion table. And then it came to an end! Redundancy or retirement, it doesn't really matter because our time is now our own again.

So, we now have time on our hands and want to start some sort of business. Perhaps not the great empire we once dreamed of, but our needs are different now. What you are probably looking for is selling your time for a few hours work a day in exchange for a steady income.

Over the coming months we will be looking at various opportunities, making suggestions as to how you can get started and start earning!

For starters, we have outlines on dog walking, gardening, and a couple of indoor ones, home ironing, sewing and surveys. Perhaps one you haven't done seriously since schooldays writing. All very different tasks, but basically, selling your time at something easy to start and capable of being developed into a regular income for you.

Later, we will look at a range of other things you can do - either without any previous knowledge or ones which may require some training. This can often be done at local education centres (courses are often heavilly discounted or free for senior citizens or the unemployed) or 'on the job', learning while you help someone else.

But say you don't want to start your own business? Well, not everyone wants the hassle or the commitment, but there are still plenty of other ways to sell your time.

Young people don't like getting up in the mornings. Now there is a surprise! It's also a great opportunity........... News agents are finding great difficulty getting paper 'boys' and girls. You will be surprised at how much they are prepared to pay these days - a lot more than the half a crown I got as a kid - and it's good, healthy exercise.

On a similar theme, consider selling your time doing leaflet deliveries - easy because you just put one in every letterbox - no addresses to remember - or Freebie newspapers which are often delivered later in the day. Talk to your news agent or local postmaster because there may also be opportunities to deliver directories and suchlike. You will be surprised just how keen they are to get help, perhaps a reflection on modern youth!
