Learning to sell your crafts online is a bit like when you first started out and went to nearly every craft fair there was. At each venue your display would improve and you would start to get a better understanding of what your potential customers wanted, the fairs that worked and the prices to charge. In other words you were performing your own market research. It may not have felt like it at the time but you were starting to understand your craft business better after each show, you now need to take that knowledge and use it to perform your own market research to enable you to sell your crafts online successfully!.
So you have come online to sell more of your craft product, you have seen examples of people making a fortune or developing a good sustainable income and you want part of that, great. But just like when you first started at craft fairs and selling to your friends you need to do some market research. You need to find out what is selling and at what price, plus you need to calculate the costs of postage. For example if you crochet it may be more profitable to make blankets than hats.
The easiest way to find out the prices is to have a look where crafters are already selling; Etsy, Ebay and a general google search will help with your research. Etsy.com is the absolute best place to sell your crafts, the beauty is that it is a global site, it has had 100,000 sellers since its launch in 2005 (source: Etsy.com) and it sells every type of craft imaginable!
When you have researched your area of expertise you can look at the type of crafts that you are going to make and the prices that you are going to set.Now it is time to sell your crafts online and the best way is to have a number of different methods, but one of the most important tools to sell anything online will be a digital camera, as crafts are bought purely on look and you want to show off your skills! Don't panic if you are not great at taking pictures, either find someone who is, and practice lots! A great tip is to put your items in a white bath - teh light refelction from your flash will really show off your piece.
First you could set up an Etsy account, this is free to do, you are charged $0.20 to list each item you want to sell and then you are invoiced 3.5% of the final selling price not including postage.
It might also be worth checking out if Ebay would be a good place for you to set up a shop or sell your crafts online, you could dip your toe in the water to see what the response would be. Ebay often run cheap listing days where it will cost you less to list your item.
The other way is to have your own website to sell your crafts online, a word or warning do not be sucked in to buying a Cheap Website, it may seem cheap at the beginning but when you add in any extras that you want, advertising to get people to the site and your time working out how to use it, you could end up spending a small fortune and have very little sales, 98% of retailers fail online!.
