How I did it

I ran a needlework business for 15 years, where I used computer software to design patterns for people to embroider. The first use of my computer was to draft these patterns so that others could actually follow them. I have to admit my hand drawn charts left a lot to be desired!

I was then able to create the sales and marketing materials on the PC, as well as learning accounting for small business enterprises through the use of computer software.

Taking my business online really made a difference. Firstly with a small sales site, which was really no more than an online catalog, and then later with a full blown informational web site that educated and encouraged people to increase their skills by having a go themselves.

The success of that site, www.needlework-tips-and-techniques.com eventually lead to my being able to outsource the manufacturing process, freeing up my time considerably, effectively an early retirement.

But not one to sit around doing nothing, I followed this success by building another site, and then another.... until at the time of writing this page I have a total of 6. Each one is based on a hobby or lifestyle of mine that I felt I could pass on information accumulated over the last 50+ years to other people who shared that interest. As I believe in, and have a passion for, each web site subject I feel I can share that passion while enabling me to enjoy staying at home and bringing in an extra income that surpasses my husband's earnings from a full time job.

Now, now, I wasn't referring to your spouse or partner here! What hobbies do you enjoy? Is there something you know lots about? If you have a yearning to pass on your knowledge, whether it be stitching or gardening, woodworking or pets, creating an information web site can be one way to do that and make money from your computer at the same time.

If you pick a subject for the wrong reasons, maybe because you feel there is money to be made in that field even though you know little about it, then your chances of success could well diminish. It is hard to write convincingly on a subject that holds no real interest for you.

Of course it is important to find out whether there are enough other people who are interested in your theme, to make creating a site about it worthwhile. There are a number of ways you can research the demand for your site concept or idea. For example, is their a local club or national society where likeminded people can gather to share this hobby or interest? Are there plenty of books in your library on the subject? Doing this basic investigation will give you a clue as to the potential value of a web site on the theme.

However, I have an even better option for you. If you are serious about wanting to make money with your computer then it is something you should definitely check out.

The software I use to create my sites, has a special module built in, that allows you to enter a subject and find out just how many people are interested in it. You can also use it to find out how many products are out there in the market that you could direct your potential visitors to, perhaps with the advantage of making commission if they then make a purchase. This way of earning money online is known as affiliate marketing.

Ways to make money from your computer

Like me, you will probably find there are many different methods to make extra money online. Let's take a quick look at some of them ...

• Your own products - these can be physical products that you mail out to customers, or virtual products that your visitor can download to their own computer
• Other people's products - we touched on this above. By becoming an affiliate you can direct your site visitors to other sites that may be of interest, with a view to them buying items from which you will earn a commission. The Amazon affiliate program is one example of this.
• Services - you can offer your services and offer quotes and take bookings online
• Information - you can also provide information of value to your visitor, perhaps in e-book format (written by yourself or someone else), or by placing adverts such as Google ads on your information pages
