There are many professional organisations who want to know your opinion about almost every suject under the sun - from soap powder to politics. The information is processed and then presented as a statistical survey report - either for the private client who commissioned it or as a more general media release.

You have all seen these surveys in newspapers or heard them reported on radio or television; 'Only 23% of Over 50's think the government is doing a good job' or 'Labour and Conservatives level pegging on 37%' or perhaps 'Nine out of ten Dogs prefer new, improved mashmeal' These are just generated from a paid survey or poll of x number of people and the more people polled, the more accurate the survey is likely to be.

Now you don't have to know anything about the subject! It is generally your opinion - the way you think - about a particular subject which is of interest. Say, you were asked," Does the name Ali bin Smith mean anything to you"? Well, you probably have never heard of him - I haven't, I just made the name up as an example - so you answer 'No'. Now that might be very valuable because if a sufficiently large number of people give the same answer, it's obvious that his publicity machine has failed.

Rarely will you be asked to do anything other than tick the boxes on a multi choice answer form. That way makes it possible for the survey company to process everything by computer - you are just 'the human interface'.

Perhaps you will be shown four pictures of a new soap power box and asked which one you might be tempted to buy. That's real world feed-back and invaluable to the manufacturer because his 'arty crafty' design team might love one design, but if the public don't, it could be a huge financial loss.

So how do you make money doing surveys? You need to sign up with one or more of the specialist survey sites - try Google for 'Surveys' - and you will be contacted whenever there is a survey recruiting in your particular geographical or demographic area - often a survey will be directed towards older people or retired or housewives or people with young children for example. Some surveys will be mailed out, most will be on-line. All you then do is follow the instructions!

A word of warning! You are doing this to make money doing surveys. If you are asked to pay to take part in a survey, walk away from it because it's a scam! Most reputable companies need your input and they expect to pay you - not the other way around..............

And finally, don't expect to earn large amounts. In many cases prizes or gifts will be offered but even when there is cash on offer, It is time consuming and anyone who has been Internet shopping for instance will know that it's not possible to speed things up. That said, it is risk free - if you take note of our warning never to pay - and it's work you can do at home and in your own time.
