Ironing for profit

Ironing

Dashing away with a smoothing iron.......

Ironing for profit. If you are one of those people who just hates ironing - and my wife Beryl is one of them - then please read no further............. If, on the other hand, you find domestic ironing 'relaxing' or 'theraputic' or even see it as an excuse to watch day-time television while working, then this one could be for you.

The simple fact is that people are leading ever busier lives and also that more young women are going out to work. They perform a constant juggling act between being good parents and earning an income. Result is that they have money, but no spare time. Indeed, by the time they have got home, perhaps collected the children from school or a baby minder, cooked dinner and got the children off to bed, there is very little time left in the day!

So, ironing for profit is an opportunity just waiting to be realised. I suggest you keep this one local, so no need for any complicated advertising. Get your postcards up in the local store and Post Office - if you still have one!. Also, many supermarkets offer free postcard advertising. Keep the wording simple; something along the lines of 'Home hand ironing. Efficient and reliable. You drop off and collect. Only £5.00 per load'. Two points here.

You set your price at whatever you think fit, but to be profitable, something between £5.00 and £10.00 a load - about what a normal domestic washing machine would hold - seems about right. However, there are some areas where you could charge far more so you need to decide this for yourself.

'You drop off & collect' You are offering a private, home based service. Nothing wrong with you collecting and delivering for your customers if you wish, but you may be making a rod for your own back. Keep it simple is my advice.

Some people also offer a washing service. Unless you are already set up with a large washing machine and a separate tumble dryer, I would advise against this. Imagine a long wet spell - we do get them - with you unable to get things dry enough to iron and the backload piling up. Your customers, even though they know it's not your fault, will be getting unhappy - You don't need the aggravation! After all, you are not starting a laundry, you are just offering a much needed private service and the idea is for it to be profitable ironing, not a constant worry..

If there are no local stores to advertise in then you can deliver a few hundred 'flyers, single sided leaflets which you can either print off yourself or get a local printer to do for you. Choose an area where almost all the houses have two cars or vans in the driveway or road - often a good sign that both partners go out to work.

Snags? The biggest one is that you are likely to be offered too much work! Be realistic, decide how much time you are prepared to spend each day and only take on as much work as you can cope with. Better to turn away work than take on too much. If the demand really is so high you could charge more and make your profitable ironing even more so, or you could perhaps find a friend or two to take on the extra load. Soon you could be running a substantial business.....................
